The Frimax Story

From a Family Wholesaler to South Africa’s Favourite Snack: The Frimax Story

There is something special about a brand that feels like it belongs to you.

For many South Africans, Frimax is exactly that. It is the packet of chips in a lunchbox, the snack shared at a braai, the familiar taste picked up on a quick stop at the shop. But long before it became a household name, Frimax started somewhere far simpler.

It began with a family, a family’s fruit and vegetable wholesale business, and a decision that would change everything.

Where It All Started

In Pietermaritzburg, long before factory floors and national distribution, Haroon Essa was working in his family’s fruit and vegetable business. It was honest work. Early mornings, long days, and a deep understanding of what people buy, what they enjoy, and what keeps them coming back.

That experience built something more than just business knowledge. It built instinct.

By the early 1980s, Haroon saw an opportunity. South Africans loved snacks, but there was space for something better. Something consistent, affordable, and proudly local.

In 1982, he made the leap.

The First Packet

On 20 October 1982, the first packet of Frimax chips rolled off the production line.

It was a small moment at the time. No headlines. No big launch campaign. Just a new product, made with care, entering the market.

But that first packet marked the beginning of something much bigger.

Through the 1980s, Frimax steadily built its reputation. Store by store, community by community, the brand grew. People trusted the quality. They recognised the taste. They came back for more.

Building With Purpose

One of the most important decisions in Frimax’s journey came in the early 1990s.

Haroon Essa made a deliberate choice to pursue halaal certification as the business continued to grow. This was not a marketing move. It was a reflection of the communities Frimax served.

Frimax was granted halaal certification in 1992, making it one of the earlier snack manufacturers in South Africa to formalise this commitment. As standards and certification bodies evolved, Frimax aligned with leading authorities and is currently certified by NIHT, a status it has maintained for more than a decade.

From the beginning, the intention was clear. Everyone should be able to enjoy their products with confidence. It was about inclusion, respect, and understanding the people behind the purchases.

That commitment continues to define the brand today.

Growing Beyond Pietermaritzburg

As demand increased, it became clear that the original setup would not be enough.

In 1998, Frimax moved to a new larger factory in Verulam. This was a major step forward. More space, more capacity, and the ability to scale without compromising on quality.

From this facility, Frimax expanded its reach across South Africa and into neighbouring countries.

What started as a small operation was now becoming a serious player in the snack industry.

A Family Business Through and Through

As the company grew, so did the involvement of the next generation.

Haroon’s sons joined the business, bringing fresh ideas while staying rooted in the same values that built Frimax in the first place. That continuity matters. It keeps the brand grounded.

Today, Frimax employs around 490 people. Each one plays a role in keeping the standard high and the shelves stocked.

Despite its growth, the business remains family-owned. That is not something many brands can say after more than four decades.

A Proud South African Brand

Over the years, Frimax has earned recognition through various awards and industry acknowledgements. Their products are now enjoyed across Southern Africa, with exports reaching beyond South Africa’s borders.

But the core identity has never changed.

Frimax is still proudly South African. Still rooted in the community. Still focused on making snacks people genuinely enjoy.

More Than Just Chips

When people ask, “Who makes Frimax chips?” the answer is not just a company name.

It is a family business built on hard work, smart decisions, and a deep understanding of its customers.

It is a story that started in the wholesale trade and grew into a brand found in homes across the country.

And more than 40 years later, it is still being written.
